At the Department of Japanese Studies we approach Japanese culture comprehensively, through the four areas of folklore and history, literature, art and thought, contemporary society, and comparative culture. We also foster in students the ability to transmit their knowledge of Japanese traditions and special features accurately to those abroad.

In addition to this emphasis on Japan-related knowledge, students also take classes in areas such as foreign languages, information processing, and expression in Japanese. At the same time as they study Japanese culture, students learn about the cultures of other nations and develop a global perspective. While pursuing an in-depth study of several aspects of Japan, our students gain skills that enable them to play an active role in international society.
